Welcome to Grade 10

Our Essential Question- Where am I going?

Themes and Goals

Our goal for Grade 10 students is to discover more about "Where Am I Going?" through the combination of core courses and exploratory options. Many students are excited by the transition to grade 10 as they can start to see the connection between their performance in school and future options.

Grade 10 students at W.H. Croxford are enrolled in six mandatory courses: Math, ELA, Social Studies, Science, Career and Life Management (CALM), and Physical Education. In addition, students will be enrolled in a minimum of two exploratory options. The majority of these options are 5 credit courses, which means students are in the course everyday for 75 minutes for one semester. This allows them to go more in depth into the course material and start to learn skills that will assist them for life. Students in grade 10 are not permitted spares and will be enrolled in eight courses.

Daily Structure

A day in the life of a grade 10 student at W.H. Croxford includes four 75 minute blocks of classes. Three of these will be mandatory courses, one will be an exploratory option. The day begins at 9:00 AM and concludes at 3:30 PM.

In addition to the four regular blocks of class time, all students at W.H. Croxford participate in a 40 minute self-directed Focus block. This block allows students an opportunity to access teachers in areas of passion as well as need. Teachers offer tutorial time, study hall, and interest areas such as wellness breaks in the gym and fitness center, peer mentoring, Yoga, Dance, Art studio time, Music recording time, Salon assistance in the Cosmetology space, and much more. The goal for this time is for students to understand where they need help and pursue it. If they are on top of their work academically, this can be a chance to spend time in an area of interest.

As well, once a week, students spend 30 minutes in their Teacher Advisory groups. These multi-graded groups are a chance for students to check in with their Teacher Advisor on their academic progress as well as sign up for Focus blocks for the week. Student feedback surveys are administered during Teacher Advisor as well as announcements made. A goal at W.H. Croxford is for Teacher Advisors to connect relationally with their students and be the 'go to person' in the building if students or parents have questions or concerns.
